Bauhaus – The Inspiration Behind the Name Expand
The Bauhaus, a German word meaning "house of building", was a school founded in 1919 in Weimar, Germany by architect Walter Gropius. The school emerged out of late-19th-century desires to reunite the applied arts and manufacturing, and to reform education.
MakerHaus is also a “house of building” with intent on providing our creative community access to resources for “making”. Through education and collaboration we provide skills and opportunity for great ideas to become commercialized and implemented.
The motivations behind the creation of the Bauhaus lay in anxieties about the soullessness of manufacturing and its products, and in fears about art's loss of purpose in society.
MakerHaus is focused on cultivating a creative membership with the ability to use the design process to develop sustainable solutions for global and local challenges.
Fine art and craft were brought together with the goal of problem solving for a modern industrial society. In so doing, the Bauhaus effectively leveled the old hierarchy of the arts, placing crafts on par with fine arts such as sculpture and painting, and paving the way for many of the ideas that have inspired artists in the late 20th century.
We envision our Haus as a sanctuary for all creative professionals to come together with the potential to solve the problems of our modern society.

Instructor: Carl MeinzingerTuition does not include materials fee ($20) Students will buy their own materials with help on sourcing and selection from the instructor.
Learn the basics of woodworking and walk away with your very own project! This five week class is designed to develop fundamental woodshop skills emphasizing safety and “best practice” techniques in the MakerHaus wood shop. During this class you will build a project of your choosing – Spice rack? Cutting board? Serving tray?
You will have an opportunity to work through all phases of your project and become acquainted with all the primary shop tools and their functions… all under the gentle guidance of your instructor. Individual projects will be discussed during the first class, so please come with ideas. After that, your instructor will guide you through the same strategic steps that apply to any project, small or large; materials selection and purchase, lay-out and take-offs, building sequence etc.

Instructor: Josh KornfeldThere are many ways to create a design business. This 5 session course provides an overview of various design studio archetypes presented via stories told by actual founders of relevant and successful firms.
At the beginning of each class session, a different design studio founder will share the history of creating their own design business, including the highs and lows they encountered along the way. The class will then work collaboratively to categorize the process they used to build their firm and discuss why this worked for them and what they would have done differently if given the chance.
The second half of each class will be dedicated to round-table collaborative discussions and brainstorms around students' ideas for their own design start-up.
Here's a run-down of each session:1: Josh Kornfeld from GENERAL ASSEMBLY product design and Joe Herrin from HELIOTROPE Architects:
www.productG.com and http://www.heliotropearchitects.com/
-Present an idea or category for your design business
-Define Your Audience/customer
-Short term goals
-Long term goals
2: Scott Bright from SYNAPSE product development:

-Define monthly expenses vs. what you expect to bring in monthly
-Define a small group of ‘advisors’
3: Greg Janky and Treasure Hinds from ANVIL STUDIOS

-What are you good at, what are you not good at?
-Storyboarding your ideas to find holes
4: Jean Lee and Dylan Davis from LADIES and GENTELMEN:

-Build a development roadmap
5: David Conrad from DESIGN COMMISSION:
www.designcommission.com
-Actionable plans for when things don’t go well
-Define first steps to launch
About the instructor:
After a few years working at design consultancies and a few OEM start-ups, Josh went solo, designing consumer, technology, games and medical products. In 1999 he founded General Assembly and began hiring others to help build the offering. When Microsoft, Tektronix, Fluke, Milwaukee, General Electric, Panasonic, and Genie Lifts came looking for help designing sturdy, robust products, Josh and team welcomed the opportunity to design equipment and devices that would have a real and lasting life. Under Josh’s leadership GA has expanded its skill-set to accommodate more compelling and technologically diverse opportunities with medical, consumer medical, and Greater Good products and services. In the years to come, Josh will guide General Assembly towards markets, clients and philanthropic organizations that will give us the privilege to design and build products and create experiences that will endure the test of time, make a few things more beautiful, and bring genuine value to the industry of life.

Instructor: David SapiroHow do you choose the best material for your project? It's an important decision that can impact the success (or failure) of your design. With so many options to choose from, it can be difficult to know where to start. This course is here to help!
This 3-week course will teach the practical aspects of materials science and how science is applicable to every day design projects. There will be an introduction to chemistry and physics for everyday use and from there, students will learn the basics of solvents, polymers, natural fibers and wood, ceramics, composites, and metals. For each subject, students will explore the basic concepts to understand how to apply science to real materials. Students will leave this class with a better understanding of how to choose the best material for the job and how to work with new materials based on their structure and composition.About the instructor:David Sapiro recently earned a Bachelors degree in Chemistry and Physics, is currently working towards Masters in Materials Science at UW, and will be attending Carnegie Mellon University next year for his PhD in Materials Science with a specialization in metals. He owns a small forge and specializes in tool making. He manufactures everything from small hand tools to large power tools to specialty laboratory instruments. The combination of science and craft gives David a unique perspective on the selection and use of materials.
